Essential hacks and tips for Monster Hunter Rise beginners

Out of all the Monster Hunter series instalments, Monster Hunter Rise is probably the one that helps its players the most

Its hunts are fast, it tells you the goals and missions you need to achieve to climb the ranks, and there are even special missions to level up faster. But that doesn’t mean you can go into the game without knowing a little bit about what you’re doing. Too many rookie mistakes and it’ll cost you a lot of Zenny, so make sure to follow these hacks and tips as you embark on your first missions in the ultimate monster-killing saga.

Choose a weapon

Monster Hunter Rise doesn’t feature new weapons, although there are new combos for some of the weapons. Your first mission is pretty straightforward: choose a weapon and learn how to use it. Since you’re going to be facing these monsters for the first time and probably don’t know what they do yet, at least make sure you can swing the weapon you’re using. The best options for newbies are usually the charge blade, difficult to use at its full power but offers good defensive and offensive capabilities; the long sword, good reach and the possibility to deliver easy and very damaging combos; great sword, same as the long sword, good range and high damage, but much slower; and light bowgun, a ranged weapon with power and mobility.

Wear full armour

Although fashion is a big thing in Monster Hunter, it’s always a good idea to mix and match armour and add decorations to achieve armour that will enhance your abilities more effectively. Although this doesn’t require much more knowledge than looking at the armour and doing some calculations, the easiest strategy is to use the synergies that the full armour sets already give you. You ‘ll have time to mix and match later on.

Capturing monsters

Rise makes this a lot easier because the game itself tells you when a monster is ready to be captured. This saves tons of time and gives you the chance to earn more rewards, so be sure to keep pitfall and shock traps as well as tranq bombs on hand. These materials are easy to find with the Argosy and most of the time you can buy them at the market or at the points store. One thing you do need to bear in mind is that some monsters are immune to traps, either to one in particular or to all of them, such as the elder dragons.

Use Frenzy missions to learn

For the most part, Frenzy missions are pretty laid-back, they’re fun to play now and again and they give you the chance to see a lot of monsters at once. They’re a great way to learn how some of the monsters move or gather materials you may need for a construction.

Use the equipment

Monster Hunter has really simplified its formula and now things like gunpowder barrels are uncommon until very late in the game, and are almost exclusively used against elder dragons or similar demons. But they can be really useful when you’re a novice as they’re super easy tactics that tend to do a lot of damage. All you need are a couple of the biggest gunpowder barrels, a small one to use as a fuse and a trap, place everything on the monster’s face and... BOOM! It’s a goner. And there’s more than just bombs. There are plenty of perks, demondrugs, and other drinks that can boost your damage, stamina and armour.
