FIFA 23 is proving that virtual football can still make headlines. The new instalment in the saga is here with its usual array of game modes, among which is FIFA’s latest take on Ultimate Team (FUT). To succeed in Ultimate Team, you need to take the right steps from the board. It’s not enough to just throw together a good squad of players; you also have to find the right formation.
FIFA’s new chemistry system is a far cry from the restrictions players have been faced with so far. By getting rid of the links between positions, you can form hybrid teams without having to change the formation depending on the players you’ve been dealt. With that said, here are three tried-and-tested formations that will make your life much easier.
Formation 1: 4-3-3 (2)
Football is sometimes more straightforward than some coaches would have it appear. A board as simple as a 4-3-3 with classic wingers allows you to maximise your attackers without neglecting the defence. The main reason for choosing this line-up is so that you can launch powerful counterattacks while the CDM backs the goalie.
To reinforce this formation, you’ll want to deploy strategic tactics changes. The two wingers should try to lose their markers when making diagonal runs forward so that the central midfielders can slip the ball between the lines. The centre forward, on the other hand, you can have him receive the ball with his back to the defence so that he can direct the game to the speedier players. You’ll also want to position the central defensive midfielder so that he can keep the ball in the centre without losing his position.
Formation 2: 4-4-2
Another classic FIFA formation. The 4-4-2 reinforces the centre of the pitch with two central midfielders on each wing operating in both transitions. When they attack, they’ll relinquish that responsibility to the fullbacks, who can stay on the defence. The two strikers offer a constant hammer for those who like the game to have some back and forth.
To make up for the lack of a CDM, pick central midfielders that have a more defensive edge, like Tchouameni. And in the case of the lateral central midfielders, remember that with the new position modifier consumable you can alternate the roles without getting too complicated. Each player has secondary positions they can switch to when you hit that item. Many wingers can work as a RM or LM depending on what wing they’re on. Hazard, for instance, can go from a LW to a LM.
Formation 3: 4-1-2-1-2 (2)
There are fewer and fewer rhombuses in the midfield of modern football. However, FIFA allows you to fulfil your defensive football dreams without forsaking your forward line. Because, at the end of the day, it’s about scoring more goals than the opponent. All the weight of the game focuses on the composition of the four central midfield pivots. You’ll want to have a CDM as an anchor, work your possession with the two CMs and have a CAM who can lose his marks as he runs towards the forwards.
A central attacking midfielder with great dribbling and passing statistics is essential to successfully execute this technique. He doesn’t need to have the fastest pace — this can be left to the two references above. Instead, look for a good blocker who can close down the ball if you get hit with a counterattack. The defence should always have this life insurance.
