The Lich King is back: Wrath of the Lich King has returned to WoW Classic, bringing with it a few yet barely noticeable quality-of-life changes. With these new updates, you’ll need a guide on what to do in the first steps of this expansion.
Getting to Northrend
WotLKC1
If you use a level-up token, you'll be quickly boosted to reach Northrend as quickly as possible. However, if that’s not the case, you’ll have to get there on foot. There are two initial areas in Northrend, Borean Tundra and Howling Fjord. Both of these contain essential missions to get past the first levels, and it’s even advisable to do both areas because you can end up getting stuck if you only focus on one of them to do missions.
You can get to Borean Tundra from Orgrimmar or Stormwind City. From Orgrimmar, start walking until you come across a zeppelin tower. From Stormwind City, head over to the port. To get to Howling Fjord, go to Undercity or Menethil Harbor, north of Ironforge, and as above, go from the zeppelin tower or the port.
Upgrading professions
To learn the Northrend professions, the first thing to look for is a profession teacher to update you and keep you levelling in the new expansion. The sooner you start with this, the better.
If you wait too long, you’ll fall seriously behind, which you’ll have to make up for by playing more hours.
Becoming a death knight
WotLKC2
Although this step is optional and depends on whether you like the class or want to try it, in Classic you now no longer need a level 55 character to create a DK. As such, this is a good option if you’re starting out and want to have a high-level character, plus you’ll find out a lot of lore about the new expansion.
Dalaran
As the main city in the expansion, Dalaran is a central hub that takes you to basically anywhere you want. Access to Dalaran is granted by completing the series of quests found in the main areas. It’s almost mandatory to set your hearthstone in this city, as it gives you access to a multitude of portals and is usually a trade hub as well as the centre for search parties for dungeons and bands.
Add-ons
WotLKC3
Playing with the interface and options that Blizzard gives players may be all well and good, but the add-ons are almost as old as WoW itself, and are an intrinsic part of the life. A vital symbiosis if you don’t want to be left tearing your hair out. Here is a selection of the essentials to survive in Classic:
Questie: Probably the most important add-on of all, Questie points out quest objectives on the map and follows your progress.
Bagnon: Another indispensable one if you don’t have the patience to open bags one at a time.
WeakAuras: At first, it may not be that useful and provide all the information at once. However, in dungeons and bands, this add-on is indispensable to keep track of bosses’ abilities and show buffs and debuffs you’ve been landed with.
Trade Skill Master: A mess at the beginning, but it’s one of the best tools to make money in the auction house, and therefore in the game, at the end. Displays detailed and up-to-date information about the server economy and the auction house.
GatherMate2: Very useful if you have gathering professions, such as mining, herbalism and fishing. It points out the nodes of each profession that we have ever collected, which will help you form a more focused path so that you’re not blindly searching. In addition, you can configure it to share it between characters.
